Unfortunately, the world is not a very peaceful or safe place for many individuals. From conflict to abuse to exploitation, there is so much cruelty inflicted on both humans and animals. While this can get disheartening and difficult to hear about, petitions are a great way to use your voice for good. Just by signing one, you are a part of helping those who are not treated fairly. You can even share them with your friends and acquaintances to increase your impact.

Through petitions, we can reach those in power and demand justice for others. They are valuable tools for making positive changes in the world. If you are looking for a way to help animals and humans, here are 10 petitions you should sign this week, including Ban Polar Bear Trophy Hunting, Keep Gray Wolves Listed as an Endangered Species, and Support the Green New Deal

We want to thank you for being the change you wish to see in the world and giving a voice to the voiceless.

1. Ban the UK Badger Cull

Since 2013, over 100,000 badgers have been killed in the UK. The government justifies the murder of these sweet animals because they are carriers of bovine TB, which kills thousands of cattle in England every year. However, this justification has been debunked by an extensive study that took place before the cull even began. The Randomised Badger Culling Trial proved that “… badger culling can make no meaningful contribution to cattle TB control in Britain.” In fact, bovine-TB rates have risen since the cull started. Badger vaccinations are not only more humane and less expensive, but have also been proven to decrease bovine-TB in the populations being treated. The government has now decided to add eleven more areas, and thus, 60,000 badgers, to the cull. Before this announcement, they promised to phase out the cull though! This rollback will not save cattle, and it will needlessly claim thousands of badgers’ lives. Sign this petition if you want the UK government to stick to its promises of phasing out the antiquated and cruel badger cull!

2. Support the Green New Deal

It’s fire season on the West Coast again. Over three million acres of land have already been burned to the ground from the California-Mexico border all the way up to Washington state. People and animals have had to leave their homes, whole towns have been reduced to ruins, and the air quality is terrible. Climate change has created the conditions for these destructive fires and based on how we’re currently treating the environment, climate scientists are only expecting things to worsen. However, there is hope. A Green New Deal would transition all of our systems away from dependency on deadly fossil fuels, and towards renewable energy with a focus on resource efficiency and conservation. This would not only save our planet, our homes, and our health, but it would also create sustainable jobs for years to come. Sign this petition to demand that U.S. legislators come together to unanimously support a Green New Deal, for the good of our economy, our environment, and our world.

3. Keep Gray Wolves Listed as an Endangered Species

Gray wolves once roamed North America in the millions, however, by the 1960s, fewer than 1,000 of these majestic animals remained alive. With the help of the Endangered Species Act and governmental classification as a species in need of defense, their populations slowly rebounded and now, there are approximately 5,690 gray wolves in the “lower 48” U.S. states. However, in September 2020, Trump’s Acting Interior Secretary, David Bernhardt, announced that the administration plans to revoke gray wolves’ official “endangered species” status! There are still not enough wolves to remove them from this list. As soon as they are taken off it will be open season for hunters. Save the gray wolves from extinction. Sign this petition now to demand that the U.S. federal government keep gray wolves listed as endangered species!

4. Stop Navy Sonar Testing to Protect Orcas

Tahlequah, a killer whale, carried the corpse of her calf over 1,000 miles as she mourned its tragically premature death. Conservationists and animal lovers rejoiced when two years later, in September 2020, Tahlequah was spotted swimming happily with a brand new healthy calf. However, their pod is not entirely safe yet. Tahlequah and her baby are two of only 73 Southern Resident orcas left, a highly endangered distinct population found off the coast of Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia. They are threatened by human causes such as overfishing, noise pollution, and shipping container collisions. Now, the U.S. Navy has said it is willing to possibly harm “up to 51 endangered orcas every year” in order to conduct sonar tests in the whales’ habitat. The sound pollution can cause whales to get lost or beached, be unable to contact her, or change depth too quickly, which can cause decompression sickness as well as bleeding from the eyes, internal ears, and even the brain. Sign this petition to protect Tahlequah, her new baby, and the entire population of Southern Resident orcas – tell the U.S. Navy to extend its no-sonar zone to protect endangered killer whales!

5. Introduce a Federal Mask Mandate

Both the World Health Organization (WHO) and the CDC have made their stance clear as well: masks save lives. By refusing to pass a federal mask mandate, nor definitively endorse mask-wearing, President Trump and his government are risking the lives of millions. While 34 states have imposed mask mandates, the other 16 states are risking the health and safety of everyone around them. Florida, a state that has refused to impose a state-wide mask mandate, would have the 7th highest COVID-19 case rate in the world if it was a country. Conversely, Vietnam made wearing a mask compulsory on March 16th and as of September 9, 2020, only 35 deaths due to COVID-19 were recorded in the country. Sign this petition to encourage Congress to introduce a federal mask mandate!

6. Ban Fox Hunting in Ireland

One of the few remaining places where hunting foxes with dogs is still legal in Ireland, where the practice seems to be thriving. Fox hunting is extremely outdated and inhumane. Sign this petition to encourage Ireland to follow England’s lead and ban fox hunting!

7. Demand that the U.S. Forest Service Stop Placing Dogs in Unecessary Danger

Ice is a police dog with the U.S. Forest Service who was sent to chase down a person, who ended up stabbing the sweet pup 9 times. The pup was just following the commands of the person who trained him, spent his days with him, and who was supposed to keep him safe. Now he is in deep pain and traumatized from the event. This violence is unwarranted, tragic, and avoidable. Plus, this is the second time this has happened to Ice! The arrest was for someone who was growing marijuana – a substance that is legal in the state of California. While  this specific marijuana operation may not have been legal, it was not a dangerous offense. Sending Ice after the perpetrator is a complete misuse of power and escalated the situation unnecessarily. Sign this petition to demand that U.S. Forest Service stop placing dogs like Ice in dangerous situations! They must retire Ice at once, and make sure no other pups meet his fate.

8. Demand Government Officials Speak Out Against Trump’s and Barr’s Corrupt Claim

“So send [your mail-in ballot] in early and then go and vote.” Those are the words of the President Trump telling his supporters to commit felony voter fraud. It gets even worse. CNN’s Wolf Blitzer brought up Trump’s comments to Attorney General Barr, the top law enforcement official in the country, during an interview and made the point, “you can’t vote twice.” Barr responded, “I don’t know what the law in the particular state says.” This is completely unacceptable and very concerning. Trump and Barr need to be held accountable for the illegal suggestion that supporters vote more than once! There is no excuse for this deliberate assault on democracy by those charged with protecting it. Sign this petition to demand that law enforcement officials at the city, state, and federal level take action and speak out against Trump and Barr’s dangerously corrupt claim!

9.  Find People Who Killed Endangered Sharks for Shark Fin Soup

Shark fins are considered a delicacy in some parts of the world, especially in shark fin soup. Thus, many traffickers, slice off the fin and then toss the shark back into the water to drown and die a slow and painful death. The mass killing of these sharks is also incredibly destructive to sea biodiversity.  In April and May of 2020, officials in Hong Kong seized 26 tons of shark fins from over 38,500 endangered sharks in two different cases. They have a suspect for one, but not the other. Sign this petition to demand justice for all these poor sharks!

10. Ban Polar Bear Trophy Hunting

Scientists are worried that polar bears may go extinct before the end of the century, but they are still being hunted for “fun.” Only about 25,000 polar bears remain. Despite this concerning prediction and the climate crisis making it worse, hunters are still killing these thousands of these poor bears. Sign this petition to demand the U.S., Canada, and Russia do everything in their power to ban the trophy hunting of polar bears!
